I'm not a mechanical engineer but I'm thinking that these ratings are the result of the manufacturers race to advertise 500 hp. If you consider the duty rating required for construction equipment versus a highway application such as a motorhome there is a wide variance in operating conditions ie. start/stop cycles,cooling requirements, time under max load/cycle etc. So a trans that would give acceptable service at 500 hp over the road would not withstand 500 hp in severe conditions.
