Steve, my 88 coach has the setup that you are talking about. I had small awnings on all of my windows and no large awning. 2 years ago I had Newell put a large one on and it is above the small ones mounted above the drip guter. You are right that the door will hit the arm when the awning is out but does not bother me. It does mark up the paint a little but you could correct that with some sort of a bumper installed either in the door or the awning arm.
I use both the small awnings and the large for different weather conditions. When I park for an extended period I put out the large one and strap it down so the wind does not take it away.
All of my awnings are zip dees and the new one that I had put on matched the others perfectly even though the small ones were 20 years old at the time.
