Detroit Engine Oil
Has anyone found a good resource for purchasing straight 40 weight oil for our Detroits? I'm happy to purchase it in 55 gallon drums. Here in Montana, it is very difficult to find and if found, it costs a fortune. Thanks, Jennifer

Good morning Jennifer! I've beren buying Shell Rotella 40wt from Jamestown Distributors. I have ordered oil twice from them at 6 gallons per order to refill my oil resevoir as needed. Per gallon it costs about $22 plus shipping, which is quite expensive because of the weight. They sell a 55 gallon drum for $715, but I can't even imagine the freight charge on that. Here's their link:

I'm sure you can call them and get a quote. My mechanic found a local source here in Southern California for 55 gallon drums, but I don't know what he paid for it.

we have all looked all over the place for it. the local truck supply place has it here for like 13-14 bucks a gallon. however, i use a charter bus companies repair facility for the engine work on my newell and he will sell oil at around ten bucks a gallon when you come in and get it and or have him change the oil. my point to that is that you should find a bus repair facility and or a truck parts supply shop and get it from them. there has to be one there locally.
don't let anyone talk you into putting anything other than 40w in.

Jennifer,
I don't where you are in Montana but if you can find a place that services old buses they would certainly work on 8v92 engines and have the oil you need. You will better luck getting at a bus repair shop or truck repair shop than at auto parts stores. I did get some in San Antonio, Texas last year at on O'Reilys auto parts store which a bus repair place referred me to.
I generaly get mine at a bus garage here in Minnesota and I also got it last year in Mesa, Arizona at a place that Tom Mcloud sent me to.
Good luck

Another source to consider is CENEX. The local farm supply store here carries the CENEX SuperLube 40 wt that meets the Detroit specs in 2.5 gallon jugs. I paid $27 each for the 2.5 gallon jugs this year.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone...and Tom, above and beyond, thanks. I will call them Monday. I had my last oil change with oil from them and Western States charged me $24/gal. Have a great weekend everyone! Jennifer

I stumbled across this post on another forum. If you dig through it you will find some decent links to discussions about oil for the two strokes.
