Default 20kw powertech puzzle

hi all,

my 02 has powertech 20kw genny. the genny itself has an 80amp breaker on it which makes sense.

however, the transfer switch is 50 amps and that feeds the main power panel that has a 50amp breaker in it.

why put in a 20kw genny if you are only going to wire up to 12kw worth of power?

what am i missing?

tom

Do you have a buddy box? Maybe the extra amps go directly to that?
Being a hospitality coach they might have wired it separately to power something else.

most people have a buddy plug. i had one in the 90 and it only has a 12kw.

i dont think my setup is unique.

i asked when i was at newell to the electrican. he said that they needed 20kw for the surge of the aircons. that even a 15kw wasnt enough.

i saw the new newells had 100amp transfer switches.

Next time I have the lid off my AC distribution box I will get the model number from the 50A breaker and check the current versus time curve. The explanation sounds reasonable if the breaker will allow the surge.
