Q
2139 7/5/2006 5:54:05 PM 7/13/2006 R. Matty rdmatty@earthlink.net 12.5 Kohler Diesel Stalls The generator on my 84 Newell stalls whenever the total amps load gets over 30. Actually one trip I could not get over 20 amps. I watched the throttle rod as I added load. It looks like the throttle was full open when it stalled. There was no black smoke from exhaust so I assume it is getting air. Does this mean the "fuel filter" may be plugged? Once it starts to lose rpm it completely shuts down, probably a safety feature.

Q
2141 7/11/2006 11:54:50 AM 7/13/2006 Jack Cody jack.cody@juno.com 1994 Newell 8V92 I'm thinking about purchasing a 1993 40' single axle coach.
I have a couple of concerns. 1. There appears to be about
8' of overhang, behind rear axle. Will this give me cause
for concern when entering various driveways? 2. Is the
8V92 enough engine for this coach? 3.Is this a fuel efficient/ trouble free engine? Or does it require lots
of "maintenance? Hope some of you will get back to me
as I don't want to buy into a "do it yourself kit" or
"annuity for others"! Thanks. J.C.

2143 7/13/2006 7:44:15 PM 7/15/2006 Gregg Nash gnash55@aol.com 1978 Charging system I have a 1978 Newell. Just prior to my purchase, the alternator was replaced. I am having trouble with the alternator maintaining a consistent charge. It will charge when the engine is first started, but does not continue. Do the solenoids control the charging current?

Q
2144 7/14/2006 12:19:02 AM 7/15/2006 Michael Day mday@hughes.net 1994 Newell 8V92 Jack, the rear overhang is always something to be aware of on any diesel pusher. I have to raise the rear suspension on mine to keep it from dragging on steep drive approaches. Just go REALLY slow and use the air suspension to raise the rear up.

As far a the 8V92 is concerned, it is certainly "enough engine" for a 40 footer (or a 45' for that matter). The 8V92 was used in 40' and longer coaches including Newell, Blue Bird Wanderlodges, and Prevost's converted to motorhomes by companies such as Marathon. 8V92's are NOT fuel efficient engines. The two advantages of the Series 60 are improved fuel efficiency and a broader power band but that is not an indictment of the 8V92. They are a good, dependable engine. Don't lug them, don't let them idle (without using Fast Idle), and don't let them overheat and you will be fine.

2153 7/18/2006 6:33:48 PM 7/18/2006 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com Battery for Refrigerator Newell used Dometic refrigerators as original equipment in 1980 models. However, as we recall, the AES models were not yet available in 1980. Prior to AES, either propane or 120 volt electric power was selected manually, with no 12 volt option. However, since over 25 years have now passed since this coach was built, quite likely the original equipment refrigerator has been replaced with a newer model, possibly a Dometic AES model.

RV parks don't supply 220 Volt's, they provide 2 (dual) 120 volt 50 Amp lines or 240 Volt 4 wire. Is there a converter or transformer?

Q
2156 7/20/2006 3:32:12 AM 7/20/2006 TechTalk Staff TechTalk@newellcoach.com 220 Volt power for the washer/dryer The dryer uses both legs of shore power. Connected in this manner, if the shore power provided is the RV standard 4-wire 220 volt/50 amp service, the dryer, as well as the 220 volt cooktop, if so equiped, receives 220 volts. If the electrical service available is 3-wire, 30 amp (or less), a second shore line connection must be available and used, and this service must be 180 degrees "out of phase" in order for have 220 volts. The on-board generator always supplies 220 volt power.

2160 7/23/2006 3:23:43 PM 7/25/2006 Michael Day mday@hughes.net ideal hookup ideas?? The marine power pedestals that include 50, 30 and 20 amp electric, cable TV, phone, water hookups, and a light all in nice unit are used in many of the newer top end parks. My favorite is the Powerhouse (see www.marinapower.com and click on RV Park hookups). The sewer connection should be within a foot or two of the power pedestal. Some power pedestals have the sewer connection integral but I don't prefer them because many of these are hard to make a good tight sewer hookup. The power pedestal should be on the drivers side of the site. Front to back spacing for a site (which should be 50' or longer), the pedestal should be about 30-40' from the front of the site as most Class A's have their hookups near the rear wheels (most typically just in front of the drive axle). For a pull through site that is long enough for the motorhome with the toad attached to the rear (typically 65' minimum length), the pedestal should be about 30' from the front of the site but not less than 30' from the rear of the pull through site. The sites should be wide enough to accommodate slideouts.

In most recent upscale RV parks, the streets are paved, the area for the RV and the toad is paved and a concrete patio is used or the pad is paved wide enough to serve as the patio as well as the RV/auto parking area.

While there should be enough slope to allow drainage, remember that the sites should be quite level. 1-2 inches of slope in 25 feet is a reasonable slope. Exceeding 2 inches per 10 feet is not good. I have stayed in parks that had 8-12 inches of slope in 25 feet. You see motorhomes with hydraulic levelers lifting the motorhomes wheels completely off the ground trying to get them level. Not good!! 20-27 feet is a common wheelbase for a larger motorhome.

2163 7/24/2006 11:14:59 AM 7/25/2006 Tuga Gaidfry tugagaidry@bellsouth.net ideal hookup ideas?? Greg, I would suggest talking to Dee Christensen with Buckhorn Lake Resort in Kerrville, TX. Dee and his wife Kathy do consulting work on RV Resort development. He is very knowledgeable in this field and has considerable experience. 800 568 6458 is the phone number for Buckhorn RV Resort. I met with Dee & Kathy a few years ago when I was planning an RV resort in New Orleans. As you can imagine hurricane Katrina put an end to my plans. If you would like to share ideas, give me at call 985 381 6613.

Good Luck.
