Default Replacing Dash A/C Compressor

My compressor for the dash A/C siezed, which in turned fried the A/C clutch, which in turn broke the generator belt.

The on the road fix was to buy some belts that just fit from the engine pulley to the generator pulley and bypass the A/C all together.

The original supplier of this unit was Frigi Cool out of Dallas, they were bought by SCS Frigette of Fort Worth a couple of years ago. I sourced the new compressor from SCS Frigette for 400 bucks. Funny, they are one block south of my office, but wouldn't let me pick up the part, they had to UPS to my house :-)

Anyway, the replacement was pretty painless, until you have to figure out how much oil and refrigerant to put back in. On the oil, I put in ten ounces since both the old compressor and the drier showed NO signs of oil. Jee, do you think that would lock up a compressor? I used a combination of sources to figure this out.

I'" borrowed" a vacuum pump from work to evacuate the system.

I ended up putting about 6.5 lbs of 134a back in the system to get it to the correct operating pressures.

Here's a few tidbits I learned along the way.

One, if you don't have the minimal amount of gas in the system, the low pressure switch will keep the compressor clutch from kicking in, and if the gas is just plain low, the clutch will cycle on for 5 seconds, and won't kick back in until the suction side pressure is above 20. If you are like me, and don't realize what is happening, then you will spend a couple of hours tracing lines and using a voltmeter, but you will UNDERSTAND the controls of your A/c System :-)

Two, you can buy a 30 lb can of 134a at Sam's club for 80 bucks, 80 bucks buys you 9 lbs of 134a at the car parts store.

Three, there are cheaper places to buy compressors. I found a GREAT place here in Fort Worth that has a gazillion A/c parts. It's Discount Auto Parts exchange at 817 624 1100. Talk to Chad Janke. Turns out they could have rebuilt my compressor for a third of what I paid for a new one.

Hope this post helps you if you have an dash A/C problem.

Richard,

Thanks for the update. Your information may prove very helpful. My dash air is out. I haven't tried to find the leak since the volume of air flow from the dash blower is so bad that if the A/C were working it would make very little difference.

I need to find a fix to the blower problem first, then the A/C.

Again, thanks for the info. This is great.

Michael
