Balance or not to balance drive tires

I asked the salesman about balancing the tires and to my surprise he said it's up to me. He said they usually don't balance drive tires on trucks. Can I get some feedback from those of you who have done it (either way) and let me know what you recommend? If it's really not necessary, then why pay for it, but I do like a smooth ride.
