Default Speedometer problems

I noticed on the last trip that my speedometer started out showing about 6 mph faster than my gps. After about 2 hours the speedometer had creeped up to within 2 mph. On the trip back it did the same thing. Anyone know if the speedo is mechanical, electrical, rubber bands or what?
Not a problem since I just use the gps for speed.
Also just got a Magellan 1700 with a BIG 7" screen! Much easier to see than the typical teeny-tiny ones. I can almost see it without my glasses!

I think yours is mechanical.

Are you also running VMSPc? If the VMS and speedo agree then it's a signal problem. If the VMS and the GPS agree then it's a speedo problem.

I had made a speedo on VMS for the trip to Creede, even managed to correct it to match the gps. But for some reason it's not working. I'll have to dig a little more into it. Cindy gets a 'lil concerned when I try and do something on the computer when I'm driving. I just keep telling she needs to learn to drive the coach!

forest, i would be suprised if your speedo was mechanical. (sorry richard). mine is electrical. and am a couple of years older than yours.

there is a hall effect transducer on the back right by the rear end. if you go my post on adjusting my cruise control sensor, it shows a picture.

there are two sensors, and they are both identical other than one is for the cruise and one is for the speedo. the speedo one is on the bottom and the cruise is on the top.

if there is something wrong it is either out of adjustment (you gap it like points) with a feeler gauge. i believe it was 30 thousandths, but i dont remember for sure. the other option is that it is bad, but my guess is that is unlikely.

Tom is right. I was typically inarticulate.

The speedo is not driven by a cable. It is actuated via a sensor. There are motors and gears internally, and that is why I said mechanical. I was thinking of the latest VDO speedos which are electronic with an LCD display for the odometer.

Since your VMS is also not picking up the speed, my vote is with Tom, it's likely a sensor issue. I believe he even posted a picture of the ring and sensor a couple of years ago. http://www.newellclassic.com/forum/s...ht=speedometer

I just got my speedometer working tonight! Mine would not start working until the coach was driven for a while. Sometimes it would start working right away, other times it would be 50 miles into the trip. On our last trip, it would not work at all. After looking at Tom's pictures, mine looks exactly like his, except I only have one sensor, it is mounted on top. The signal is split right under the Bendix Speed controller. One wire goes to the controller and the other goes right to the Signal terminal on the back of the speedometer. I jacked up the coach and checked the sensor, mine had a 6 inch pigtail coming out of the sensor. Follow the wire up and in the engine compartment, here mine had a nother connector right below the Bendix controller. Hopefully you will have a Gray and a Green wire. The Gray is your signal, the green goes to ground. You can use a volt meter to see if its functioning. Set the meter on AC volts, Attach the positive lead to the Gray wires pin and the other meter lead to ground. Have some one spin the tire by hand, make sure the plate with holes in it is spinning (if both sides of the coach are jacked up, the wheels can spin but the plate may not), you shouls see some deflection in the signal, the meter reading should jump every time a hole passes in front of the sensor. To really check the sensor, use an oscilloscope, you need at least one volt peak to peak to make the speedometer function. If you have that your sensor should be fine. I had a signal coming right out of the sensor but when I put the scope on the speedometer I did not have it. My signal wire(white wire/blue strip) goes from the signal terminal on the back of the speedometer to terminal 31 on the terminal strip in front of the passenger next to the floor. From there it goes back to a 4 pin connector right under the Bendix Controller. Evidently unplugging this connector and plugging it back in 4 or 5 times fixed my problem. Nothing else but troubleshooting was done, the speedometer is now working fine. I believe the sensor pin was just not making a good connection inside the connector. Also if you start the coach and put it in drive (while jacked up) you may see as much as 7-8 volts peak to peak on the scope. If you have two sensors, yours may not be like mine. Took the coach out for a drive today (before the monsoons set in) and to get a brake tag. The speedometer started out like it did last time but after a few miles it went to full scale and now it stays there. Looking at this diagram http://www.egauges.com/pdf/vdo/0-511-011-348.pdf
I have the 5 wire gauge. But there is no wire connected to the red on the harness going to the sender (there is a blade connector where one should be connected?). I looked but can't find a wire that is not connected that might be it. But I am getting a speed reading to my VMSpc that corresponds to my gps.
Any thoughts? Could someone check and see if they have all 5 wires connected to the back of their speedo?

mine is a 3 wire and is not a vdo. all my gauges are vdo except for my tach and speedo.
