Squirrel Cage and Generator
I am going to rehab my generator compartment and squirrel cage area. My squirrel quit running so rather than just do it the easy way I am going to put in new insulation and marine plywood etc in the generator compartment as well. My friend has a forklift so that will be the hard part.
Is the squirrel a 220v squirrel? The generator works but it shuts down in about 15 minutes once it gets to temp.
Advice or tips? I have seen a couple of picutures of the aluminum tread that was used, that looks great.

the squirrel cage itself is a standard grainger dayton brand. i replaced mine. you have to weld the back plate that mounts to the coach on it, but no big deal. under 200 bucks.
the electric motor is a 220v. unless the bearings are bad, there should be no reason to replace it. you will find it to be quite expensive.
i saw someone put diamond plate in the bay there. it looks great, but not what i would have done. i put sound proofing rubber on the walls, then sound proofing batting like i have in my engine compartment.

here is the blower that was in my coach. i bought this one and installed it.
dayton 4TM02 blower

that is without the motor.
my original blower had brass sleeve on the squirrel cage shaft and NOT bearings. the new blower has replaceable ball bearings.

Thanks Tom, the squirrel cage spins freely. Does your run when the generator runs, or does it come on when it gets up to operating temp?

the genny blower motor comes on when the genny comes online. no sensors, no switches. if the generator is generating 220v, then the motor is running. (at least on mine)
it will heat up pretty quickly if the fan is not on, particularly if you have it under heavy load.
i can run mine when it sits in the driveway in full sun when it is over 110 degrees and it will keep the air flowing through the radiator to keep the genny cool enough. when it is that hot, it will run a hotter temp, but not enough to overheat.
the radiator is very simple to take out, so i took mine out and had it serviced at the local radiator shop. was under a hundred bucks. then i put a new thermostat and hoses on.
make sure you run antifreeze with the additive, just like your coach engine.
i will Private message you with my phone number.

I have a new thermostat being delivered tomorrow. I also ordered a new capacitor once I saw the shape of the current one. I should have it Friday.

If you have an analog Multi-Meter you can check the Capacitor. Put the Meter on the Ohm Scale, I like using the higher scales for this (R x 1,000). Put the Leads on the Capacitor Terminals, now reverse the Leads. You should see the Needle Jump up the Scale.
