Default Dutch Oven What Size is Best ?

I figured I would get a quality camp style dutch oven. I'm planning on picking up one from Lodge, but not really sure what size to get. I'm debating over a 4 quart 10" and an 8 quart 12". It will 75% of the time be just my wife and myself, but we also entertain relatives or have friends who follow with us. I'm sure I'll eventually end up with both sizes using the larger for main courses and the smaller for sides, breads, desserts etc. But for now any advice on which size I should start out with?

If you don't mind left overs and it is just the two of you most of the time. I would suggest the largest to medium sized one.

Dutch ovens can be expensive from $30 being the lower end all the way up to $500 or more for a French Le Creuset pot. When you are talking about a dutch over cost is usually a good indicator of quality. I say buy the best and it will last for years. As far as size goes larger is better in my opinion this way you never have to worry about over flowing the pot.

Start with the 12" DO. You will eventually want a 16" DO for making pizza.

I've used dutch ovens for years cooking while camping. We carry 1-8" and 2- 10" ovens with the inverted lid to hold the coals on top. Have fun with it, it is so relaxing to cook this way.

Leeann the blue one you pictured is a Lodge and I can't recommend it enough, they're reliable and they've got several types of cast iron cookware options at very affordable prices. We have had one for years and it's the best buy for your money. Amazon.com: Lodge L Series E6D30 Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven, Liberty Blue, 6-Quart: Kitchen & Dining

My choice was based on the largest size that would fit in my microwave/convection oven & still rotate. Went from store to store with a tape measure. Think I ended up getting it at Bed, Bath & Things

I'd buy a Lodge cast iron dutch oven in a medium or smallish size. It will work well and last forever.

12" USA MADE Lodge is what we started with and is the most versatile. Makes a nice pizza for two.
