Richard, you are my hero! Wow, what an undertaking. Looking forward to pictures, and most of all good news....that it's not an expensive fix.

Richard,
Glad to hear things are settled enough for you to find some time to care for the Newell. As an owner with the same power plant I am very interested in your project. If you could find the time to post often and with pictures I bet there are others who would benefit now and in the future from your experience.
I was able to see a Detroit 60 on an engine stand with the valve cover off when I was at Tom's bus shop in Phoenix. I took some pictures, my favorite with my daughter standing beside the block giving a good scale of the size of motor. As you said, it's big and heavy.
Even if you don't have time to give us a blow by blow, good luck and I will continue thinking about what you have undertaken.

Tuga, thanks for the wrench, it pushed me over the edge. I had no excuses then.
Russ, I will take some pics of the problem when I find it, and as I go back. I was a bit grimy to handle a camera on Sunday to say the least.
As far as 60's having a systemic problem, I just don't see any evidence of that. I do keep coming back to this issue developing after I flushed the cooling system, and refilled with coolant. I was meticulous in this operation, but the engineer/problem solver in me can't help but connect the two events. Hopefully the diagnosis will help me determine if I actually caused a problem or not.

Richard,
Have you checked out the Diesel Talk Forum on the DieselEngineTrader site?
http://www.dieselenginetrader.com/di...es.cfm?catid=9
There's a gentleman over there who goes by Gonefishen. He's a wealth of information on anything Detroit Diesel related.
BTW, a mechanic friend and myself recently pulled the head off my S-60. It took new injector tubes and seals, and while in there we renewed a bunch of stuff.
Tuga, nice to see you on this site!

David,
Nice to see you posting on this site as well. That is a great post and I am sure that it will benefit Richard in his repair job.
We need to get some of these Newell guys to join POG (David and I are members of Prevost Owners Group otherwise known as POG). The POG site has a great deal of info that would benefit Newell and BlueBird owners.
2 heads are better than 1.

Tuga,
I am a POG member as well. I was there researching as I made the Newell/Prevost decision. Since then I have not been active or lurking. Sounds like I need to change that.

That's great Russ - there are some really good discussions about mechanicals on that POG site as there are on this site. It is simply another forum to hear people's experiences.

Tuga,
This weekend I was in College Station at the OU vs. A&M. I met 3 members of POG and they spoke very highly of you. I was proud to know you were a Newell owner. I plan on joining after meeting them and knowing there are other Newell owners onthere.

Tom,
Glad that you met some POGGERS. We have been members since 2006 and have really made some good friends. It's uncanny how much we have in common.
What did they think of your Newell?

Thanks Tom, that would be Gordon Deen and Loc McNew. Gordon has a 99 Marathon and Loc has a 03 Millennium w/2 slides.
Glad you got to meet them. I'll mention your name next time I see them.
Thanks for posting Tom.

I guess I should clarify something I never have. I am actually Toms son Andrew. I put Tom and Julie under the signature since its his coach, I just like to think its mine. I am 18, so I cannot have mine own Newell yet! I have always been the one posting on this website. When I meet Gordon and Loc, my father was not with me, as I said I was with my friend in his Newell, so they would not know who you were referring to as Tom French.

Ok, back on the original topic. I have finally had some time to play with the coach some more.
First I had to make a fixture to bar the engine...I used some common plumbing supplies and a redneck milling machine (sidegrinder)

Russ wanted pics of the head coming out.
I threw in one of the camshaft and one of the top of the head before removal. You are looking from the bedroom on that one.

Richard,
Nice job! When we spoke on the phone I forgot to mention at the engine is easily turned over (barred) using the water pump pulley nut.
Happy to see the progress!
