I decided to eat light today. Fixed a small plate and was proud of my self control. Until I got to the desserts. Oh, well, it was all good.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

As some of you know, Darlene and I are in Israel. I am here for a work assignment and have been here for a little over a month. we will be getting home in late january. yesterday was our first thanksgiving ever to not have our entire family together. we flew our oldest daughter over for a two week vacation to be with us and we spent her last day with us (thanksgiving) in Bethlehem. it was a fascinating day as we had a christian palestinean tour us around for the day. we had breakfast for thanksgiving dinner...we put her on the airplane at 2:30am this morning to go home to her husband and kids...
darlene said as we thought about going through the guarded checkpoint at bethlehem (it is like the iron curtain....wall, guards, like a prison), we are grateful to have our home in america. our guide said being palestinean and being in bethlehem is like being in prison.
we have been asked to extend our stay another month and will now be spending christmas and new years here as well. yet another first for us as a family not being together with our kids at christmas. we are flying our two college age ones over to spend christmas with us, tel aviv is not much for christmas but we heard bethlehem is so we will do at least one evening there then...
there are a zillion busses here and i always twinge a bit when i see them weave in and out like sports cars and look at all the scratches and dents on them. i miss driving the ol newell...it fits like a gigantic glove around me and i love driving her. darlene asked me one time when we had been driving for a long day in the newell if i was ok and needed to stop. i said it was fun like driving a race car and i loved it.
we have been able to see a great deal of israel and still have a few more things we want to see. when we leave here we are going to take a few weeks vacation and tour in egypt.
reading the newell site is a nice reprieve and connects me back home. although looking out our tenth floor balcony 100 yards from the mediterranen sea isnt bad either....
happy days to all of you
tom and darlene in herzliya israel
