KC, I think the answer to your question about whether or not plasma and LCDs will stay around probably depends on whether or not the company licensed to market them, which looks to be Canon can share (for a nice profit) with other companies? Looks to be a better technology and hopefully even less expensive to build. I think price and available size will be a big determining factor.

Another question will be, when and if Newell Coach will add one of these to its line-up? How long does something have to prove itself before Newell Coach offers such a thing? Hmmmmmmmm....?

~ How Does All This 'SED' Stuff Work ~
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
On the cutting edge
«~» From Canon and Toshiba : How Does all this 'SED Stuff Work ?'
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
«~» Well, instead of having one big electron gun, as we do in a typical CRT television, shooting out
a stream of electrons that zap the phosphors on a TV screen causing them to emit light, in SED
technology, each pixel has 3 of its own microscopic electron emitters, each lighting up the red,
green and blue phosphors within the individual pixel. In a SED TV with a resolution of 1920 x 1080
pixels, the resolution the first SED displays are expected to appear at, that will be a total of
6,220,800 emitters. The electron emitters, a thin film of Palladium Oxide, can be positioned just
millimeters from the phosphor-coated pixels resulting in the slim form factor ;
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
«~» That's it, in a nutshell, pretty easy to visualize, a lot harder to implement ;
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
«~» Some key specifications for the 1080p models : 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 1ms response time,
450 nits brightness, 30,000 screen life and low power consumption
in comparison to Plasma and
LCD screens ;
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
«~» When the anticipated full scale production of 70,000 units a month hits its stride towards the
end of 2007, SED televisions should incorporate the picture quality, sharp resolution and fast
response times
of traditional CRT tube TVs with the size, weight and form factor of Plasma and
LCD displays
, while all the time keeping power consumption extremely low.

~ 'SED TV Pricing' ~
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
On the cutting edge
«~» 'PRICING' – The only indicators are statements issued by Canon and Toshiba representatives.
- Most indications are relative to an equivalent size Plasma screen.
- Though even hazarding a guess at what the price of a 55" Plasma display will be at the back end
of 2007 is a feat in itself considering the rate at which Plasma and LCD prices have been falling.
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
«~» The first stages models of mass production will debut at 55-inches, will have a contrast ratio
of 100,000:1
, will have a 1- millisecond response time, will support 1080p and will consume a
third of the power
of an equivalent sized plasma panel.

«~» Yoshihide Fujimoto, CEO of Toshiba's Digital Media Networking Company :
"Theoretically, prices for SED can be much lower than plasma"

«~» Fujii describes the SED TV's picture quality as "having more potential than any other TV
panel technology,"
and expects the pricing to receive "a 10-20% premium over the price of PDP
and LCD TVs." - Yoshihide Fujii, Senior Vice President of Toshiba Corp.

«~» Ryohei Takahashi, Merrill Lynch analyst :
South Korea's Samsung Electronics is aiming to get the price of a plasma set down to $20 per inch
by 2008. That would mean $1,000 for a 50-inch TV.

«~» Alejandro Arango, Toshiba spokesman ;
Pricing still is unclear but is likely to target high-end consumers thirsting for the crispest resolution
they can get on a flat-screen. “It’s is going to be a premium price,” he says. “It will be the best
thing out there.”

»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
«~» Now who knows what will happen down the road for 'PLASMAs' – 'LCDs' manufacturers.
They will work harder to improve their products and/or
. . . we just might see 'PLASMAs' and 'LCD's' as the 'Toy of the Month' at Mc Donald's or why not in a
'Kellogg's Mega Size Cereal Box !'
Just Kidding ! . . in a 'Regular Size Kellogg's Box !'
»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««
«~» All the readings I've done recently with all the advantages that comes with 'SED TV's' (even if
they had a few bugs with it) the demand will be from it's beginning.
So we just might see them in '08-'09 Newell's.'

~ 'SED TV's FUTURE – IS-IT A GO FOR CANON ?' ~
»»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««~»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««««
In Brief :
«~» A patent dispute involving surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) panels is being
waged between Canon and Nano-Proprietary Inc. – In February 2007, A U.S. district court said
that Canon had violated the technical license agreement.

«~» Canon Anelva Corp., plans to boost production capacity at its Fuji factory, Yamanashi
Prefecture, by 80% over the next three years to make equipment for SED TV. A fourth building
at the Canon subsidiary’s Fuji facility will be online by August and other expansions to a total
investment of 2 billion yen (US $16.9 million).

« ? » Will Canon make a do-or-die resistance to the court’s decision or seek an out-of-court
settlement
? Or withdrawing from the business. New TV sets with SED panels are plan for 'Next
October-December.' Canon is now being forced to make a difficult decision.

« ? » Withdrawing from the business ? Out of the picture with all the new investment announced.
»»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««~»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««««
COMPLETE STORY :
«~» A patent dispute involving surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) panels is being
waged between Canon and Nano-Proprietary Inc., a U.S.-based high-tech venture business. A U.S.
district court handed down a summary judgment in February 2007, in which the court said that
Canon had violated the technical license agreement it had concluded with Nano-Proprietary.

«~» Prior to this final verdict, the court has started calculation of the amount of compensation it
will order Canon to pay to Nano-Proprietary.

«~» Canon Anelva Corp. a provider of manufacturing equipment for semiconductors and display
panels. According to the 'Nikkei Business.' plans to boost production capacity at its Fuji factory,
Yamanashi Prefecture, by 80% over the next three years to get ready to make equipment for
SED TV display panels based on surface conduction electron emitter display (SED) technology.
A fourth building at the Canon subsidiary’s Fuji facility for cutting and welding steel and aluminum
parts will be online by August; cleanroom and other facility expansions will bring the total investment
of about 2 billion yen (US $16.9 million).

« ? » Will Canon make a do-or-die resistance to the court’s decision or seek an out-of-court settlement ?
There is, of course, the third option of withdrawing from the business. Canon plans to release new TV
sets equipped with SED panels in the October-December period. With the deadline drawing near, Canon
is now being forced to make a difficult decision.

~ 'AGAIN, TOSHIBA PUTS OFF 'SED TV' ~
»»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««««
BEIJING--SED TV just can't get off the ground.
«~» Toshiba said it would postpone the launch of surface conduction electron emitter display (SED) TVs
from a planned launch in the fourth quarter. This time the delay is because Canon, its partner in SED,
will not be able to supply displays to meet the original schedule. A specified time for the launch cannot
be stated at this time, Toshiba said.
»»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««««
«~» Last October, it was all systems go for SED TVs, which have better picture quality than LED TVs but
are just as thin, according to advocates of SED. Toshiba showed off a prototype at Ceatec, an electronics
trade show in Japan, and said its first commercial product would be a 55-inch set. SED TVs had been
delayed in the past, but this time it appeared that the release would occur.
»»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««~»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««««
«~» But in December, Toshiba announced it wouldn't show the sets at CES in the coming January. The
reason was a long-simmering lawsuit between Canon and Nano-Proprietary. Subsequently, Toshiba sold
off its interest in the Toshiba-Canon joint venture to Canon. Toshiba, though, said it would still come out
with sets. Canon, however, has never made TV sets.

»»»»»»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' ««««««««~»»»»»»»» 'NewellClassic.com' «««««««««««««
«~» Seoul, Jun 14 (Korea Newswire)-- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has introduced the largest
(70 inch) commercially available full high-definition LCD TV in Korea.

« ! » World’s first adoption of innovative Local Dimming Technology, a dynamic contrast ratio of
500,000:1

« ? » Terminology :
«~» Local dimming backlighting technology : The conventional, bar-shaped CCFL backlight is
replaced by an LED backlight consisting of hundreds of light source. The lit parts of the on-screen
image can brightened to the maximum while all light is shut off in the dark areas of the screen.
The result is the ultimate contrast ratio. Moreover, the reduction of brightness in the dark areas
also cuts power consumption by as much as half.

«~» LED scanning : The LEDs are rapidly shut off in sequence, artificially eliminating the ghosting
of the moving images.
