8v92 radiator cap pressure for a new cap? and recovery tank?
hi, i want to replace my radiator cap. the one on there is the same as is on the generator and says 15-18psi. i have the yanmar manual and it says 15.8psi, so i know that is ok. i dont have any manual on the 8v92 so dont know if it is right. does anyone know what pressure cap i should be using for sure on my 8v92? i also noticed there is no coolant recovery tank for either the generator or the 8v92. since it is so hot here in phoenix i am going to put one on the generator. any advice on if i should put one on the 8v92? thanks....i am going through a steep learning curve and i know i am posting alot, but thanks for the answers....

Tom, my 8V92 and most of the 8V92's I have seen are running a 7 psi radiator cap. I hope someone from Newell will chime in here but I know that either a 7 or a 9 psi is what Detroit Diesel recommended at the time for the 8V92 per the service manual. As a matter of fact Detroit Diesel recommends that even in pressure testing the engine you should not exceed 20 psi.
I have not seen an early 90's Newell with an external overflow tank on it although I am sure someone has done it. I find that if I fill the tank to the center of the sightglass when the coolant is cold, I rarely have to add coolant. If I try filling it higher than that it seems to puke out more coolant so that it drops well below the bottom of the sightglass.

On the 1992 and 93 models, it is accessed from the rear radiator door. It is about two inches below the top on the passenger side of the radiator. It looks like a bolt sticking out of the radiator.
Note that I updated my post above to show that Detroit Diesel recommends EITHER a 7 psi OR a 9 psi radiator cap. That's what I get for going from memory (forgot the 9 psi cap) instead of checking the manuals.

I have the set of two Detroit Diesel Series 92 Service Manuals. You can find the CD versions on Ebay (search Detroit Diesel Service Manual). The printed manuals are harder to find and much more expensive. Try to find one that has a publication date no earlier than 1988.
