Overhaul vs new on gensets
Looking at a coach where the genset has over 15000 hours.. Can you rebuild these or is it better to just replace? Also coach as only 2 8-d batteries my old coach had 6.. Opinions an comments please..

Hi Yachts, what year coach and what generator are we talking about? Sometimes it is worth rebuilding them. As you can see, the life expectancy of the better is gens is amazing when you do the basic service on them.

Yachts,
This really depends on what Engine the Gen has. The newer YANMAR Engines are much more expensive to rebuild than to just replace. Now if this was a PERKINS I would just use it until it needed it needed major repairs and then do a rebuild.
PS We have an '82 with a 12.5 KOHLER ond PERKINS Diesel. Might not be "Green" but...................

Great advice from Sean and Steve here. I'm assuming you have a 20 kw Kohler? They are not cheap to rebuild but then again it depends on the history of the unit and if it has other major components already replaced and you are just talking about the rebuilding of the engine, injection pump etc....
I may have a lead on a low hour used one which would be very reasonable compared to either new or rebuild.

I'm assuming since your talking about a 1997 Newell that it is equipped with a 20KW Power Tech? That being said give powertech a ring I read on their site that they can rebuild or refer you to an authorized repair facility.
I posted a link to their site below,

I should also state that allot of commercial boats are simply re-powering their older gensets with newer 4 stroke diesel engines, still an expense though and if not needed why bother. Remember that an older 2 stroke properly maintained could last a very long time.

When I had to replace the genny side of my unit, I called Newell and got Martins number and ordered a brand new 21kw unit. I forgot the cost at the moment but it wasn't as much as I would have thought..
