Default Dodged a bullet

Today I was messing around in the engine compartment trying to identify the source of a tiny but persistent engine oil leak. The lower left side of the engine to the rear of the tranny was gunky. While I was cleaning up the mess in hopes of finding the source of the oil I noticed one of my coolant hoses for the coach heating system had a serious soft spot right where it touched the engine dipstick tube. The hose was worn less than some other hoses I've found in the past but this one appeared to have coolant within the carcass of the hose, not a great sign of future reliability. I noticed that many of the hoses around the engine are just laying there so I will be going on a campaign of Tye-wrapping them with cushions and to each other. In my aircraft mechanic days this was standard to keep things from wearing through. BTW, I didn't locate the leak but will work more on that later.

I'm posting this as a reminder to watch those hoses. On an 8v92 the last thing you want to do is lose the coolant, a loss that is usually followed by a loss in your checking account.

Jon, it sounds as if you are on the proper course of preventative maintenance to bring this baby up to snuff like your previous '77. You are one that has had to learn by example in the past as I have too and sharing about one's learning curve or experience will hopefully save others whom might read these posts from major expenditures or a major deduction via the checking account as you put it.

Jon,

Wyn and I got waylayed in Evanston, WY by a winter storm, we were lucky as we found the only RV park still open prior to winter shutdown. A Canadian bus conversion couple came in next to us, besides the storm, they had a problem with their very earlier version of an aqua-hot system. I troubleshooted it for them and found their temp controller was NG, since they could not find a 24VDC version they had to run their engine to keep warm, that was a Friday night. Saturday morning we found 22 pints of transmission fluid had leaked from a hose that had rub against the measuring tube. We were able to find the only two hoses in town and replaced them and the fluid, so at least they had heat. You got to watch them hoses.

Safe Travels,
